Thread Veins
Also known as spider veins or broken capillaries
Facial thread veins are small, visible blood vessels that sit just beneath the skin's surface — commonly appearing on the cheeks, nose and chin. While entirely harmless, they are a frequent cosmetic concern and one that our clinical team at Shujo Aesthetics can effectively address.

What Are Facial
Thread Veins?
Facial thread veins — also referred to as spider veins or broken capillaries — are tiny dilated blood vessels that become visible just beneath the surface of the skin. They typically appear on the face as fine networks of lines, often clustering around the nose, across the cheeks, or on the chin.
They are most commonly seen in shades of red, blue or purple, and tend to become more noticeable as we age — partly because the skin gradually becomes thinner over time, making small vessels closer to the surface appear more prominent.
Contributing Factors
What Causes Facial Thread Veins?
Ageing Skin
As the skin naturally thins with age, small blood vessels sitting close to the surface become far more visible. This is one of the most common reasons facial thread veins become more prominent from middle age onwards.
Sun Exposure
Prolonged or repeated UV exposure weakens the walls of small capillaries over time, causing them to dilate and remain permanently enlarged. The face — being the most sun-exposed part of the body — is particularly susceptible.
Genetics
A tendency to develop facial thread veins can run in families. If close relatives have experienced visible capillaries on their face, you may have an inherited predisposition — independent of lifestyle or environmental factors.
Hormonal Changes
Significant hormonal shifts — such as those experienced during pregnancy, the menopause or as a result of contraceptive use — can affect the integrity of small blood vessels and contribute to the development of thread veins on the face.
Extreme Weather Conditions
Repeated exposure to very cold or very hot temperatures causes blood vessels to repeatedly constrict and dilate. Over time, this cycle can permanently weaken and enlarge delicate capillaries — particularly on the cheeks and nose.
Lifestyle Factors
Smoking impairs circulation and damages vessel walls, while regular alcohol consumption causes repeated vascular dilation. Both are well-established contributors to the development and worsening of facial thread veins over time.
Affected Areas
Where Do Facial Thread Veins
Most Commonly Appear?
Facial thread veins can develop in various locations across the face. Because the skin on the face is relatively thin and constantly exposed to environmental factors, it is one of the most common areas for visible capillaries to form. The most frequently affected zones are:
How We Can Help
Treatment Options at Shujo Aesthetics
Our clinician will assess the nature and extent of your thread veins and recommend the most suitable treatment approach for your skin type and severity.
LED Light / Photo Therapy
Specific wavelengths of light are directed at the affected vessels, where they are absorbed by the haemoglobin within the vein. This causes the vessel to gradually collapse and fade over a course of sessions — without any damage to the surrounding skin tissue.
Learn MoreRF Microneedling
Radiofrequency microneedling helps improve overall skin tone and vascular visibility in areas prone to thread veins. By stimulating collagen renewal and reducing underlying skin inflammation, it can reduce both the appearance and progression of facial capillaries.

In some cases, a personalised prescription skincare programme — combined with tailored lifestyle guidance and sun protection advice — forms the most effective foundation for managing existing thread veins and preventing new ones from forming.

Your Questions Answered
Frequently Asked Questions
Are facial thread veins dangerous?
No — facial thread veins are entirely harmless and do not indicate any underlying circulatory problem. They are purely a cosmetic concern. However, they can sometimes be associated with skin conditions such as rosacea, which our team can also help manage.
How many treatment sessions will I need?
This depends on the number, size and depth of the thread veins being treated, as well as your individual skin type and response to treatment. Most clients see visible improvement over a course of sessions. Your clinician will provide a clear recommendation during your consultation.
Is treatment painful?
Treatment is generally very well tolerated. Most clients describe the sensation as a mild warmth or brief flicker of heat. There is no significant discomfort involved, and no anaesthesia or recovery time is required — you can resume your normal activities immediately.
Will the thread veins come back after treatment?
Treated vessels can be significantly reduced or eliminated. However, new thread veins may develop over time — particularly if the underlying triggers (such as sun exposure or rosacea) are not managed. As part of your aftercare plan, we will provide guidance on how to reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
Is treatment suitable for darker skin tones?
Absolutely. Our clinical lead Esther has specialist expertise in treating all skin types — including darker and more melanin-rich skin tones. Treatment protocols are always carefully adapted to suit your individual skin characteristics, ensuring both safety and effectiveness.
