Spider Veins
& Thread Veins
Also known as broken capillaries or thread veins
Spider veins are small, dilated blood vessels that become visible through the surface of the skin. While entirely harmless, they can be a source of self-consciousness — particularly when they appear on the face or legs. At Shujo Aesthetics, we offer safe, clinically effective treatments to significantly reduce their appearance.

What Are
Spider Veins?
Spider veins — also referred to as thread veins or broken capillaries — are small, dilated blood vessels that sit closer to the surface of the skin than normal veins, making them far more visible. They appear as fine red or purple lines, often forming clusters or web-like patterns just beneath the skin's surface, which is how they earned their distinctive name.
Although spider veins are completely harmless from a medical perspective, they can spread and become more prominent over time — particularly in response to prolonged skin inflammation, environmental exposure or lifestyle factors. Many people seek treatment simply because they affect their confidence or complexion.
Root Causes
What Causes Spider Veins?
Sun Exposure
Prolonged or repeated sun exposure is one of the most common causes of spider veins on the face. UV radiation weakens the walls of small blood vessels over time, causing them to dilate and become permanently visible through the skin.
Skin Trauma
Physical trauma to the skin — including surgical procedures, injuries, aggressive skincare and even repeated rubbing or picking — can damage small capillaries and cause them to enlarge and remain visible beneath the surface.
Alcohol Consumption
Regular alcohol intake causes blood vessels to dilate repeatedly, which can eventually lead to permanent expansion of small capillaries — particularly on the face around the cheeks, nose and chin, where spider veins most commonly appear.
Hormonal Changes
Hormonal fluctuations — including those associated with pregnancy, the contraceptive pill or hormonal therapy — can cause blood vessels to become more prominent. Spider veins on the stomach are particularly common following pregnancy.
Certain Medications
Some medications — particularly those that affect circulation or cause blood thinning — can contribute to the development of spider veins by weakening vessel walls or increasing blood pressure within the capillaries.
Chronic Inflammation
Conditions that cause long-term skin inflammation — such as rosacea or eczema — can promote the over-growth of small vessels as the skin attempts to increase blood flow to the area, leading to visible thread veins over time.
Where They Appear
How & Where Spider Veins
Present on the Body
Spider veins can develop on various areas of the body. They are typically recognised by their red or purple colouration and their distinctive web-like or branching pattern — resembling fine, spidery lines clustered just beneath the skin's surface.
Because they sit much closer to the skin's surface than normal veins, they appear more prominent and cannot be concealed by makeup alone. The most frequently affected areas include:
How We Can Help
Treatment Options at Shujo Aesthetics
Our clinical team will assess the extent of your spider veins and recommend the most appropriate treatment approach for your skin type, severity and location.
LED Light / Photo Therapy
Targeted light wavelengths penetrate the skin to reduce the visibility of thread veins by targeting the haemoglobin within the vessel — causing it to shrink and fade over a course of sessions, with no damage to surrounding skin.
Learn MoreMicroneedling RF
Radiofrequency microneedling can help improve the overall skin tone and vascular appearance in areas affected by spider veins — stimulating collagen and skin renewal while reducing the inflammatory processes that contribute to their development.

For some patients, a course of prescription skincare combined with lifestyle guidance and sun protection is the most effective foundation for managing and preventing the progression of spider veins — particularly when associated with rosacea or skin inflammation.
Book ConsultationYour Questions Answered
Frequently Asked Questions
Are spider veins dangerous?
No — spider veins are completely harmless from a medical standpoint. They do not indicate any serious underlying circulatory condition and pose no health risk. Many people choose to have them treated simply for cosmetic or confidence reasons.
Can spider veins go away on their own?
In most cases, once spider veins have developed they will not resolve naturally without treatment. They may even worsen or spread over time — particularly if the underlying trigger (such as sun exposure or inflammation) continues. Clinical treatment is the most effective way to reduce their appearance.
How many treatment sessions will I need?
This depends on the size, depth and number of thread veins present, as well as the treatment modality chosen. Most patients see visible improvement after a course of sessions. Esther will advise the ideal treatment plan during your consultation.
Can spider veins come back after treatment?
While treatment can significantly reduce existing spider veins, new ones can develop over time — particularly if the underlying causes (such as sun exposure or rosacea) are not managed. We will advise on preventive measures and maintenance strategies as part of your aftercare plan.
Is treatment suitable for all skin types?
Our clinical lead Esther has specialist expertise in treating all skin types — including skin of colour. Treatment protocols are always adapted to suit your individual skin tone and sensitivity, ensuring the safest and most effective outcome possible.
